A Kiss Goodbye - the Queer Kiss-In
-
by John Balz

This year on April 17 – prospie day – the seniors showed up but the Kiss-in never happened. Why? Well, the simple answer is that another group had the Rock reserved.

BGALA President Matthew Barbour, in an email, said he thought that a Christian group had the Rock reserved and was a bit apprehensive about sharing the Rock for such a visible and raucous event. Norris Campus Planning and Production offices said that Project Wildcat had the Rock reserved on the 17th.

Why didn't BGALA simply reschedule? Barbour said the Kiss-in is an event designed specifically for prospective student day as a demonstration that NU is a safe and tolerant environment for people of all sexual orientations. He said the event is geared more the hordes of travelling observers, not undergraduates scuttling between classes. Instead BGALA decided to focus on its busy Rainbow Week and the Spring Dance on May 26.

Barbour did write that it was "really nice that people keep coming up and asking me when the kiss in will be, or why it wasn't held – saying that it made such a positive impact on them as prospies in the past that they hoped we would do it again."

With or without the Kiss-in, its impact lives on.
