SASA SUPERSTARS

Devon Street may be a few miles away, but how many NU students know that another brown town exists right on campus? Like its bigger brother in Chicago, NU's South Asian community started as a mutual support group: hundreds of downtrodden premeds needing others to hear their stories of how Baylor has just gotten impossible to get into, and how thoracic surgery doesn't even guarantee seven figures anymore.

This small group of brave souls eventually grew into the 1000-pound gorilla of ethnic clubs, the South Asian Student Alliance. A typical SASA student hails from the Midwest, and there's a good bet he comes right from the Chicago suburbs. The rest are a renegade bunch, willing to come from the center of the universe, New Jersey, to this frontier outpost.

While most of them haven't been to India more than once or twice, they are willing to fight to the point of a hunger strike to make sure no one is deprived of the right to learn Hindi.

Social habits? Diesel and Gap are the apparel of choice, and the more jewelry, the better. Those men looking to rebel particularly hard against the folks sport the ubiquitous ear stud. SUVs are far and away the most common vehicle – the giveaway is usually generic house music pumping from a subwoofer.

They put on two massive cultural shows a year, and bring countless speakers to campus. They're your SASA Superstars. What more can brown do for you?

Manu- Sorry, I don't give a damn about the stereotyping article, but I did want to get in touch with you. I got your number from either Kristin, Craig, or Laura (there was a $10 all you could drink special, so I don't remember who:). Anyway, heard you were in NYC and would love to hang out. If you have any free time (and are really here) call me at 646-823-7438. Hope all is well!
